Creating a Bold Statement Piece: Outdated China Cabinet Painted, Turned Into Command Center

Here is one of my favorite pieces! This hutch was my grandparents’, and sat in their dining room for as long as I can remember! Stuck in the slats in front of the glass in the doors were their grandchildrens’ school pictures, family photos, and various prayer cards. On the counter sat their personal-sized television and Grandpa’s infamous Web TV console and keyboard from which he’d write his mile-long, one-sentence run on, wonderful-to-receive emails.

This is our farmhouse DIY version! I added a coat of a cheery light lime paint to match the rug we have, complement the wood floors, and bring a modern pop to the room. Our dining/living area has a lot of wood: wood floors, dark wood trim, dark wooden doors…wood, wood, and more wood. A great fresh color like a lime distracts the eye from the heaviness of the wood and blends nicely with our cream wall color. I also replaced the slats in the windows with silver chicken wire, and added glass knobs. It is now a great piece to showcase the heirloom china my dear friend’s family so generously passed down to us for our wedding and an assortment of pictures of our sweet daughter. Adding some glassware, a vintage crock from the basement, and a white-washed basket to the top completes this piece.

UPDATE:  A fantastic feature worth mentioning…this hutch is actually a hidden command center! Inside the doors at the bottom you’ll find a wireless printer, paper shredder, extra paper, and kids craft supplies.  In the drawers, there is a surge protector serving as our device charging station (we drilled a hole in the back of the drawer to hide the plugs!), and everyday office supplies.  Take a look…
